Common TB Myths vs. Reality

Common TB Myths vs. Reality

Tuberculosis remains a global health challenge and common problem in India, yet much of the fear surrounding it.To protect our communities, we must replace stigma with science. Here are the most common myths debunked.

Myth 1: TB is a Hereditary Disease Many believe that if a parent has TB, their children are born with it. This is false. TB is caused by bacteria (Mycobacterium tuberculosis), not genetics.

Myth 2: You Can Catch TB by Sharing Food or Clothes TB is not spread by shaking hands, sharing toilets, or using the same cutlery. It is strictly airborne. You can only become infected by breathing in tiny droplets expelled when someone with TB coughs.

Myth 3: TB Only Affects the Lungs While the lungs are the primary target, TB can be "extrapulmonary." This means the bacteria can travel through the bloodstream to affect the spine, kidneys, brain, or even the skin.

TB is preventable and 100% curable with a full course of anti TB medications. If you have a persistent cough (over 2 weeks), night sweats, or unexplained weight loss, consult a pulmonologist immediately.
