Hypersensitivity pneumonitis (HP) is a form of interstitial lung disease (ILD) commonly seen in India. Studies showed it is the second most common ILD in the country , Majority patients are non-smokers and women who are homemakers. Pigeon & avian droppings are a frequently identified cause, along with microorganisms from contaminated air coolers, specifically in the hot and humid climate.
We see pigeons are commonly perching on balconies, ledges, and rooftops despite efforts to deter them using bird spikes and nets. Their droppings, feathers , excreta are get inhaled and deposited in the lungs , leading to inflammation, increase in immune response which in turn harm our lungs and cause Interstitial Lung Disease called Hypersensitivity Pneumonitis.
Patient may have cough , breathing difficulty, fatique, drop in Oxygen levels.HP can be deadly at times.
