A Pulmonary Function Test is a simple, quick way to check how healthy your lungs are. It helps detect lung diseases early, guides treatment, and ensures your lungs are functioning at their best.
It's a non invasive test , can be done in all age group patients. There are multiple pulmonary function tests like Sirometry, DLCO, Forced oscillometry .
These tests measure:
1.How much air your lungs can hold
2.How fast you can blow air out
3.How well oxygen moves from your lungs into your blood
PFTs are painless, safe, and usually take 10–20 minutes. You breathe in and out through a mouthpiece while following instructions from a technician or doctor.
All should include PFT in their annual health check up list. Who Should Get a PFT regularly as per doctor's advise ?
1.Individual who is having asthma or COPD
2.Smoke or used to smoke
3.Have long-term cough or breathlessness
4.Are exposed to dust, chemicals, or pollution at work(occupational exposure)
5.Are undergoing major surgery
6.Feel breathless more than usual (poor effort tolerance)
You can also detect early lung function decline in individuals who are smokers.
